About this artwork

Auguste Rodin was a remarkable French sculptor who is typically regarded as the pioneer of modern sculpture. Even though he was educated in a traditional manner, he mastered the skill of modeling intricate and deeply indented surfaces using clay. Rodin's work 'Femme vetue allongee sur flanc' depicts a woman reclining on her side, drawing her blue dress fabric towards her chest. Notably, Rodin was an extraordinarily productive sketch artist, producing well over 10,000 drawings that were similar in style. He used these as research for his sculpting works.

About the artist

Auguste Rodin (1840-1917) was a French sculptor, considered to be the father of modern sculpture. He was a leading figure in the Impressionist movement and his works are well known for their emotional intensity and realism. Rodin was born in Paris and studied at the Petite Ecole, where he was taught by the sculptor Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse. He was also influenced by the works of Michelangelo and Donatello. Rodin's most famous works include The Thinker, The Kiss and The Gates of Hell. He was also a prolific draughtsman and printmaker. Rodin was married twice and had a long-term relationship with the sculptor Camille Claudel.
