About this artwork
A colour lithograph was created by Firmin Bouisset (1859–1925) in 1893. Menier Chocolate company, also known as Chocolat Menier, is a French business that started manufacturing chocolate in 1816. Originally, they were a pharmaceutical company based in Paris, during a time when chocolate was often used for medicinal purposes. The business, founded by Antoine Brutus Menier, stayed under the management of his family until 1971. That's when Rowntree Mackintosh Confectionery took over. By 1988, Menier had become a part of the Swiss conglomerate Nestlé when it bought Rowntree Mackintosh. Six years later, in 1996, Menier transferred its production to the Swiss city of Broc, where it has stayed ever since.In 1892, Menier hired Bouisset, an artist known for his painting, print making, and poster art, to create an advertising poster. He featured his daughter Yvonne as a model in the poster, which eventually became an icon of a little girl using a chocolate piece to write the company's name. This particular drawing can be seen on numerous Menier company advertisements and packaged goods. It also appeared on promotional items, including creamers, bowls, plates, sugar dishes, canister sets, ashtrays, thermometers, key chains, and even children's exercise books.
