About this artwork

Andy Warhol's fascination with shoes dates back to the early 50s. His unique blotted line drawings of footwear, particularly high heels, played a significant role in his professional life both as a commercial and fine artist. Warhol was known for his shoe illustrations for clients like I. Miller and Glamour magazine, and he even named many of his shoe designs after celebrities such as Julie Andrews, Kate Smith, and Zsa Zsa Gabor. He also had cowboy boots named Elvis Presley and James Dean. Warhol's shoes were either highly stylised or quirky, but always sophisticated. In 1955, he published A la Recherche du Shoe Perdu, a book filled with imaginative shoe drawings. By 1980, he decided to revisit his favourite subject matter. It was during this period he created his Diamond Dust Shoes series using crushed glass particles which gave his work a sparkling glitter-like quality. This allowed him to blend some of his favourite themes into the Diamond Dust Shoe paintings – the glamour of movie stars, high fashion, and wealth. The Diamond Dust Shoe artworks surfaced at a time when disco, lamé, and stilettos from Studio 54 had seised the attention of Manhattan's elite. Warhol, who had been a pioneer of the New York club scene since the early 60s, once again mirrored the era he was living in through his art.
