Andy Warhol's iconic Campbell's Soup Cans are some of the most recognised and praised pieces in art history. He kicked off his Campbell's Soup Can art series around 1961, and the theme took on various expressions over the following years. The Ferus style of Campbell's Soup can artworks, named after the thirty-two pictures of individual cans displayed at the Ferus Gallery in Los Angeles, are the most extensive and famous of Warhol's Campbell's Soup creations. For these pieces, Warhol painted the iconic red and white cans, using a soup type list provided by the Campbell Soup Company and ticking off each soup variety as he finished it. Another Campbell's Soup cans series, created around 1965, features nineteen differently coloured cans. For these pieces, Warhol not only utilised ink colours that deviated from the actual colours, but also used spray paint to colour the backgrounds and the lower (white) section of the label in various colours. The result was a collection that felt both surprising and familiar at the same time. Through these revolutionary pieces, Warhol redefined our perception of art.
