About this artwork

"Drum Bridge and Setting Sun Hill at Meguro" is a piece of artwork created by the Japanese artist Utagawa Hiroshige, who was a specialist in Ukiyo-e. Ukiyo-e is a traditional Japanese art style that involves a shared system of production, with the artist, carver, printer, and publisher each playing a unique role. The print depicts travelers making their way to the Fudo Temple in South Edo's Meguro region, crossing a tiny stone bridge amidst a heavy snowfall.

About the artist

Ando Hiroshige (1797-1858) was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist, well known for his landscape prints. He was a member of the Utagawa school, and his works were heavily influenced by the Chinese painting style. He was born in Edo (now Tokyo) and was the son of a fireman. He was apprenticed to a woodblock carver and printer, and later studied under the well known Utagawa Toyohiro. His works are known for their bold compositions and use of bright colours. He is considered one of the last great masters of the ukiyo-e tradition.
