About this artwork

Alfred Sisley was a British painter, most known for his work in the Impressionist style, though he lived the majority of his life in France. He was one of the most dedicated Impressionists, preferring to paint his landscapes outdoors, a method known as en Plein Air. Sisley created a number of winter scenes, including the notable 'Snow at Louveciennes'. This painting showcases a road blanketed in snow, stretching into the background with only a solitary figure for company. Sisley was drawn to the winter countryside because it allowed him to portray the melancholy and despair of nature, mirroring his own solitary nature.

About the artist

Alfred Sisley (30 October 1839 – 29 January 1899) was a French Impressionist landscape painter who was born and spent most of his life in France, but retained British citisenship. He was influenced by the Impressionist style of Claude Monet and Camille Pissarro, and was a member of the Impressionist group. Sisley's early works were mostly urban scenes, but he later turned to landscapes of the Seine and the Loing river. He was known for his ability to capture the effects of light and atmosphere in his paintings. Sisley was married to Eugénie Lesouezec, with whom he had two daughters.
