About this artwork

This picture presents Henry VIII around his mid-forties when he'd already kicked off the process of tearing down monasteries and religious establishments, and had his second wife Anne Boleyn and Bishop John Fisher put to death. The image draws inspiration from one by Hans Holbein the Younger, which is housed in the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, Madrid. However, this copy, which was painted on copper by an artist of a later period, could be from the late-sixteenth or early-seventeenth century. The print's colour is a perfect match to the original, and has been given the green light by the National Portrait Gallery. Every purchase you make aids the museum in its operations.

About the artist

Hans Holbein The Younger (1497-1543) was a German artist and printmaker who was one of the greatest portraitists of the Northern Renaissance. He was known for his precise and detailed drawings and paintings, which were often of religious figures and royalty. Holbein was influenced by the Italian Renaissance and the works of Albrecht Dürer. He was court painter to Henry VIII of England and created many of the iconic portraits of the Tudor monarchs. Holbein also created woodcuts, book illustrations, and designs for stained glass and other decorative art.
