'Street Scene with Viaduct' was painted by L.S Lowry who is recognised for his portrayals of busy urban landscapes in the north of England filled with stylised figures often referred to as ‘matchstick men’. For this painting Lowry has captured people walking underneath a viaduct, a bridge that consists of a series of arches to support a long elevated railway or road. By including a viaduct, Lowry is drawing attention to the industrial landscape of northern Britain which relied heavily relied upon the steam train.
