In 1983 the French impressionist artist Claude Monet bought a plot of land next to his house in Giverny, Northern France. Monet was inspired by the water gardens he saw in Japanese prints. The artist decided to create his own by filling an existing pond with exotic new hybrid water lilies and built a humpback bridge to run over it. The water garden and its lilies became the subject of over 250 paintings produced by Monet.

A pioneer of French Impressionism, for Claude Monet (1840-1926) the importance of observing natural light led him to paint outside 'en plein air'. Over time he would repeatedly return to the same scene, capturing changes in colour and light, most famously in paintings of his beautiful garden and pond at Giverny. King and McGaw's Monet collection includes images from The National Gallery and The Courtauld Gallery.
