Self Portrait with White Shirt, 1910

Egon Schiele

#470579

(read reviews)
In 1910 Austrian figurative artist Egon Schiele produced ‘Self Portrait with White Shirt’ depicting himself with unruly hair wearing an oversized white shirt with his hands clenched at his waist.  Schiele left the shirt white but painted his hands, legs and face in shades of browns and oranges reflecting the tones he used for his hair. Schiele used an unusual composition and fiery colour palette to reflect his complex personality.

Austrian artist, Egon Schiele (1890-1918,) is regarded as one of the most radical painters of the 20th century. He and his close friend and mentor, Gustav Klimt, constantly inspired each other's works. Schiele's elongated, angular figures are unapologetically honest, characterised by bold, continuous lines.

When drawing, the artist would keep unbroken eye contact with the life model, not taking his pencil off the page. He embellished his nude sketches with injections of bright colour, creating highly original works of art.
