Church in Unterach on the Attersee, 1916

The Austrian artist Gustav Klimt produced a series of landscapes throughout his career, whilst maintaining his decorative style. In 1916 Klimt produced this painting of a church in the village of Unterach on the southern shore of lake Attersee in Austria. The church spire had a distinctive onion-shaped dome which Klimt painted red and this colour is echoed in windows and roofs throughout the picture. Klimt added bursts of red to attract the viewer’s attention to the church as there are no lines of perspective.
