(read reviews)
Edgar Degas was a 19th century French Impressionist painter mainly recognised for his pastel drawings and oil paintings. Degas sought to capture fleeting moments in the flow of modern life and particuarly identified with the subject of dance. In 1874 Degas produced ‘The Dance Class’ an oil painting depicting ballerinas and their mothers waiting for a class to start conducted by Jules Perrot, a famous ballet master. The scene is set at the rehearsal room in the old Paris Opera which had recently burnt down.

Edgar Degas (1834 -1917) was a skilled French artist whose most celebrated works are his delicate depictions of ballet dancers. Noting that he was known as the 'painter of dancing girls' he observed that 'my chief interest in dancers lies in rendering movement and painting pretty clothes'. In other words, he had a superb knack for capturing motion and an intuition for the right hues to give his work a soft vitality.

There is quiet exuberance to these prints; our collection include Degas' dancers as well as portraits of women and sporting scenes.
