John Atkinson Grimshaw was an English Victorian-era artist known for his nocturnal scenes of urban landscapes. Grimshaw’s passion for realism stemmed from his interest in photography. He often used a camera obscura or lenses to project scenes onto a canvas enabling him to create perfect perspective. ‘At the Park Gate’ is one of Grimshaw’s many night-time scenes where he focused on the light created by the moon.

John Atkinson Grimshaw was born in Leeds in 1836 and became one of the most successful oil painters of the nineteenth century, known for his moonlit urban landscapes. He used Victorian photographic techniques, projecting outlines onto canvases with a camera obscura or even painting over photographs. Grimshaw's enchanting compositions capture the beauty of the night and make atmospheric art prints.
