Yves Klein (1928-1962), a prominent French Conceptual artist, held a fascination for pure colour. His signature monochromatic blue series, in the iconic pigment International Klein Blue, was seen as a transcendent tool, embodying his perception of infinity. Klein, born in Nice to artist parents, ventured into painting in the late 1940s and developed his first monochrome theories. Intrigued by Eastern mysticism in his early twenties, he delved into Judo in Japan before moving back to France.
His first solo exhibition took place in 1955 at the Galerie des Solitaires, Paris. Initial works included monochromatic pictures in a range of colours, but from 1957 he primarily used blue, and from 1960, gold.
In 1960, Klein co-founded the Nouveau Réalisme movement. Other notable members included Arman, Jean Tinguely, and François Dufrêne. Klein's fusion of mysticism and performance art offered a contrast to the Abstract Expressionist and Pop Art movements of his era. Today, his works grace prominent galleries, including those in New York, London's Tate Gallery, Paris's Centre Georges Pompidou, and the National Gallery in Washington, D.C.
