Born in Landstuhl, Germany in 1956 as Michael Patterson, Rex Ray was raised in Colourado Springs. Influenced by Andy Warhol, he adopted the pseudonym Rex Ray before moving to San Francisco in 1981. He attended the San Francisco Art Institute and rapidly became an influential figure in the Bay Area's vibrant art, literary, and activist circles.
Well known for his innovative pop aesthetic, Ray's work spanned fine and commercial art. His masterpieces adorned everything from canvases and wood panels to album covers, book jackets, murals, and rock posters. One of the pioneers of utilizing Mac-based technologies in art creation, his graphic designs found favour with notable clientele like David Bowie, The Residents, DreamWorks, Levis, Neiman Marcus, Sony Music, and even Apple.
Ray's designs were distinctive, appearing on products as varied as scarves, ceramics, wristwatches, surfboards, and even a Mini Cooper. His extensive portfolio includes vibrant paintings and works on paper. He combined Xerography, handmade woodblock prints, newsprint, and magazine images with parabolic forms and abstract patterns, drawing inspiration from mid-century modernism, Dada, Fluxus, decorative arts, and Pop Art.
