Johann Baptist Reiter, born in Linz-Urfahr in 1813, pursued artistic training at Vienna’s Academy following apprenticeship in his father’s carpentry business. Under the mentorship of Leopold Kupelwieser, Reiter flourished, receiving substantial support, commissions, and scholarships.
Throughout the 1840s, Reiter gained prominence for his realistic portraits and genre paintings, solidifying his status as a favored Biedermeier painter in Vienna. Despite his sympathy for the 1848 revolution, Reiter's renown continued to grow. His portrayals of lively children and remarkable women, such as writer and feminist Louise Aston, garnered particular acclaim. Notably, his subjects included not only Viennese bourgeois ladies but also his wife and beloved daughter, Alexandrine, affectionately called Lexi. Reiter remained committed to his realistic style characterized by subdued colors throughout his career. The passing of his daughter Lexi in 1883 prompted Reiter to largely abandon painting until his death in 1890.
