Claude-Marie Dubufe (1790-1864), was a Parisian who dreamt of a diplomatic career. But his passion for art steered him towards the studio of famed painter Jacques-Louis David in 1804. Despite his family's disapproval, Dubufe's dedication was unwavering. He even funded his lessons by playing violin in an orchestra.
Dubufe's artistic journey began with historical and everyday scenes. A trip to Italy in 1811 proved pivotal. There, he met the Orléans family, launching his successful career as a portraitist. By 1830, he focused solely on capturing the likenesses of high society, a niche that brought him acclaim. Over 150 portraits were exhibited at the prestigious Paris Salon. Artistic talent ran deep in the Dubufe family - both his son and grandson became painters as well. Today, Dubufe's works are admired in collections across France, Chicago's Art Institute, and even London's National Gallery.
